and she’s lost to you, little green

By tallu schuyler

i bought a thick copper sink at a tag sale maybe a decade ago or more. its base and basin are not connected, and its pieces can be moved separately, which is good since it weighs probably 90-plus pounds. time has turned the metal into a rusty, green patina, and the sink looks like it’s been soaking in the color of old age. it’s been in storage at my parents’ house for more than ten years and moved around at least that many times. my family hates the sink, especially my brothers, who are always the ones stuck with the job of moving it. next to it in the attic are stacks of old New Yorkers, boxes of rocks, art from college that ought to be wheeled to the curb and thousands and thousands of photographs. i can just hear my dad saying prayers of thanksgiving that we are in a digital age, because since being here, i’ve taken thousands more.

that same color of patina is everywhere in my eyes and everywhere in the photos. it’s the color of age, but against the one hundred shades of dirt and dry, the color is so fresh and everywhere, like a little spill of something cool to freshen what is always hot. it’s a pretty dusty landscape, and i feel like i have to find beauty in the same things over and over—perhaps a task we’re forever charged with, no matter where we live. so we take a new picture of the same wet mop, we see a new color in the ancient morning sun, we find a new way to use what we’ve already used, and we read over and over again that same verse about old things becoming new.

Love that you can see the beauty in what others may see as “needing a touch-up or two”. I also love the latino appreciation of COLOR. Jeshua in the wheel barrel – so sweet!

T, both the words and images are beautiful. So much so, in fact, that at some point I hope maybe you’ll let me purchase prints of a few? I would love to have all those boards and doors in my home (when I have one).

un mil bendiciones para ti, mi amor.

Ah once again, so vivid. Maybe in a year you will post the picture of the sink so we can see if it matches what’s in our head… Happy Wednesday to you my friend! xoxo

I am working on my sermon today and took a break to catch-up on your life. I am being moved toward the focus of looking at the world with God’s eyes. Your post and photos were perfect toward that end. I wish I could have them all around as I preach. I love seeing the world through God’s eyes through you. XOXO

I am glad to see that there are others my age who love Joni Mitchell! Thanks for sharing these pictures; they are lovely.

Do you suppose there was a major shipment of Russian sea foam green paint to Nica at some point? It’s a little odd that that particular color is so everywhere. Gorgeous pictures! Thanks! Todd and I are thinking of you. And thanks for the 3 Sisters rec. I think we’ll go there.

Hi Tallu! Just catching up on your life and am always thrilled to read your words. I love your writing! As hard as it may be for you to get through every day there, what you write makes it sound beautiful! From someone who is a photographer at heart (but a grocer in real life!), the photos are an awesome view of your world. It’s nice to get a peek at your life there. Keep them coming. Expect a package sometime soon! Miss you lots!
